San Diego Rocket Society 2003

November 15, 2003

This was a small launch (three people!) with the San Diego Rocket Society, all photos were shot by Dan Pollino. I had three flights this day, the first was Unoriginal flying on a 76-3500Ns sparky motor. It came out to be an L600 or so and hit 8,000′ with a nice throaty roar the whole way up. Next up to bat was the Laser LOC on a fuchsia load for my Kosdon 54-2550Ns motor. A countdown from 5 and Dan’s nifty wireless launch system popped the igniter, boosting the rocket quickly to nearly 12,000′ over mach 1 (see video below). The last flight was my 3″ AMRAAM on a 54-1050Ns sparky motor without the dark smoke, which I’m sure was Gary’s inspiration for Metal Storm:)  The AMRAAM made it to 5,100′.

That wireless launch system looks like it worked well. Any further details on it available? (Also +1 for spelling “fuchsia” the right way, haha)

Ha! Well if you’re a spelling/grammar Nazi (and my spidey sense says yes) I apologize lol. I’ll TRY to be more careful and proofread so you don’t have a panic attack. ;)

As far as the launch system goes, the aforementioned “wireless” controller description was a bit deceiving. Although no wires were used, the system utilized compressed air to close a relay via an air hose IIRC. Definitely different, but unfortunately the thin-walled rubber hose was not sparky motor approved!

Nonono, you DID spell it right! (http://blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/) Sheesh try and give the guy a compliment and it gets shot down ;)

Too bad the airhose burned through, that sounds like it would have been the perfect system for launching rockets from a hot tub.

Op, I lied and am dyslexic. I stand by my hot tub comment though.
